In the original fairy tale "The little mermaid", there's a scene where all her sisters "sell" their hair to the evil sea witch so they can save the little mermaid from the torture of being a human. She can't speak nor walk normally... and the prince gets married to another woman. The witch gives them a magical dagger. If the little mermaid kills the prince with the dagger, she will become a mermaid again, but in the end, her love for him is too strong, and she can't do it so... she sorta dies (she becomes a sea foam fairy or sth)...
Quite different from the Disney version, isn't it? (Though I love the Disney version so much
)
In a book I read when I was little, each of the sisters had the hair of a different color, it was a bit kitsch... but I loved it
