Underworld by Arbetta Underworld by Arbetta
I didn't know how to call these Greek deities as a group... I guess it's ok to mention the Underworld because all of them belong there in some way. I decided to draw something related to the dead for Halloween, but not specially scary stuff :aww:

From left to right, up to down:

The Erinyes (The Furies): goddesses of vengeance, "those who beneath the earth punish whosoever has sworn a false oath". In the Greek tradition they are three: Alecto, Megaera and Tisiphone.
Hades and Persephone: the king and queen of the underworld... I really like this couple :meow:
Melinoe: possibly their daughter, goddess of the ghosts and the offerings to the deceased.
Hecate: ancient and powerful goddess related to magic, necromancy, wilderness and witchcraft.

Hope you like them :D

Hecate is a "good" (she helped the gods so she was allowed to live) Titaness, not a goddess. She is the most fascinating Greek deity to me. Though technically she was given portions of Sea, Sky, AND Underworld so putting her here is kind of weird... xD

Absolutely amazing. I really like how you portray Melinoe, as usually she's portrayed as being happier. She's the goddess of ghosts, she's not exactly meant to be some happy go lucky girl.
Awesome job though!

Very original, as always :) But I've never heard of Melinoe, always thought that Hades and Persephone were childless!

This is really beautiful. Where did you get the quote "those who beneath the earth punish whosoever has sworn a false oath"?

I like how you portrayed the furies as mischievous sisters rather then savage demons. All they want is a little more justice in the world; in my opinion.

I love the way you portray Hades and Persephone. I don't picture him as some perv or whatever who stole a beautiful woman. He fell in love with her, and I think Persephone would have learned to love him back. Super cute!

Oh, a question. Where did you find all this information about the mythology? I've had trouble finding anything good.. ;/

Well, I have many Greek mythology books in my home, since my dad always read me those when I was little. This is the book I always read though: www.abebooks.com/Gods-Heroes-C… (but in Spanish ;)

When I have to write something here about the gods I know I usually check Wikipedia in Spanish, English and French (sometimes in Italian, too) and also this web: www.theoi.com/Encyc_A.html

Hope this helps ;) It's great to find more mythology fans!

Hecate can be depicted as a young woman with twin torches (and like an ancient witch) or as a "three-formed" being. Many drawings and paintings show her with three bodies and three faces, like in this picture: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

Hades and Persephone is my favorite Greek myth, and I hate how often he's betrayed as a monster or the devil....especially since there are some versions of the story which say Persephone played a part in the whole "eat a pomegranate and stay in the Underworld for part of the year" scheme.
This is to say, THANK YOU! for not being one of those people and for drawing them as a couple.
I love it!

Thank YOU for writing this comment, it cheered me up! :aww: I'm also sad sometimes when people think Hades is like the devil or something. Movies like the Percy Jackson one (I know it's not like the books) or the Disney one... or the Wrath of the Titans one... all make Hades the bad guy. And it was not like that. Death was not regarded as evil in Ancient Greece. Hades was not loved, he was feared, but he was somewhat apathetic and a drop-out, that was all :D
I also like those versions of the story when Persephone eats the fruit because she wanted to, I mean... she decided to be a woman and not a girl forever. I think it's a dark story, but also very interesting and romantic in a way.
So thank you again

wow! you know alot about greek mythology but I myself am not behind. I am a bit of a show off, and annoying, and the person that corrects everyone's mistake........ but I must say that I too know some things about Greek mythology and I must say that Melinoe, my most favorite nymph EVER, was the daughter of Zeus and Persephone. I am one of those grammar nazis, or you can say Greek nazi. BTW..... GREEEAAATTT AAARRRRTTTTTWOORRRRKKK!!!!!!!

Actually, it's highly controversial whether or not Melinoe was Zeus or Hades's daughter. I myself believe she was the daughter of Hades, seeing as how she is the goddes of ghosts, but it depends on who you talk to.

Or, some say, Zeus tricked Perspehone into believing he was Hades. When Hades found out, he was furious and beat Persephone while she was pregnant which is why Melinoe is the goddess of disturbed souls, or ghosts.

Still though, it makes more sense when you think about it. I mean, Hades-God of Underworld, Melinoe-Goddess of ghosts. (Plus I ship Hades and Persephone)

Haha, I suppose so. In the songs to Melinoe, its never really made clear, except for the fact that she had a violent beginning. I ship them too. So much it's unhealthy.

I LOVE how there is so much chacter in each of these drawings. I don't know if this will make any sense as I try to describe it, but it's like just the pictures sort of... give way to the other senses. I feel like I can see them move, and I can hear their shreaks and sighs, and just be invited into their world. That probably sounds like I'm a nutcase, but it's how I feel, and makes your already awesome art just even more fantastic! You very much bring these characters to life.

i like your picture, sorry i'm more than bit late to the party to say so. i'm curious though, and i figure you're a good person as any to ask, why you and other people enjoy the hades/persephone coupling so much? i mean i like your picture but i'm always curious what makes people decide they're in love since in their story zeus tricks her into getting captured and raped by hades and then when she finally gets to leave, he tricks her into eating a pomegranate which forces her to come down to the darkness of the underworld every year. (not trying to be rude just curious) can you please explain why people find that romantic?

Well, Hades really loved her and wasn't a bad guy. He didn't rape her, he wanted to marry her. I read a comic once that showed their story, and in it, Persephone sees the gentle nature behind his grim facade and eventually comes to love him too. It was so sweet :)

Hades and Persephone are too cute. It's one of my favorite couple of Greek Mythology (the first are Zephyr and Iris). I like your representation of Hecate (her hair and her neck ...)
White hands of Melinoe to recall the ghosts. I did not know it was possible daughter of Persephone and Hades.

Good work! :D
